Designation Order under the WMEBV

The Modernization of Electronic Government Traffic Act (Wmebv) ensures that citizens and businesses can handle their affairs with the government digitally.

The government is digitizing, and increasingly more legislation and regulations are being created to properly structure digital processes. For this reason, the Modernization of Electronic Government Traffic Act (Wmebv) was also established, which takes effect on January 1, 2026.

What does the Wmebv do?

You are allowed to send official messages digitally to the government. Think of:

• applications for a licence
• lodging an objection
• submitting a complaint

The government must clearly indicate which digital channels you can use (for example, an online form or message box).

• You will receive confirmation when you have sent something digitally, so that you have proof.
• The government must not ask unnecessary questions in digital forms.

Why does this law exist?

• To make contact with the government easier and more modern.
• To ensure that everyone, including people who are less digitally skilled, receives good assistance; this is known as the duty of care (zorgplicht).
• To better protect your rights during digital contact .
