You need an environmental permit only for felling or drastically pruning trees that are on the list of trees worthy of protection. For trees not on this list, a permit is no longer required.

The list of trees worthy of protection includes not only trees owned by the municipality, but also trees owned by private individuals. Anyone who has a valuable tree in their yard that is included on the list of trees worthy of protection received notification of this in October 2011.

Please note: If you wish to apply for an environmental permit for a tree listed on the tree list, you may do so only if you are the owner of the land on which the tree is located, or if you have written permission from the owner (attach the authorization to your application).

What should I do?

You can apply for a permit to cut down trees (an environmental permit) through the Omgevingsloket online portal at .

Additional Information

To cut down trees that fall under the Nature Conservation Act, you must file a felling notification. These include, for example, trees located outside built-up areas. For more information, please visit the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RvO).
