Fairtrade Community

Voorschoten has been a Fairtrade Community since 2019. The signs at the town boundaries bear witness to this.

In Voorschoten, many Fair Trade products are bought and sold by supermarkets, clothing stores, churches, organizations, schools, businesses, consumers, and the municipality. Furthermore, the municipality applies Fair Trade principles in its procurement policies and bidding processes. Among other things, this means that the coffee, tea, cane sugar, and various types of sandwich fillings served in the town hall cafeteria bear the Fairtrade label. 

By sharing the story behind Fairtrade, offering Fairtrade products, and buying Fairtrade products, we work together to ensure that farmers and producers in developing countries are treated fairly. Voorschoten is thus part of the international Fairtrade Towns campaign, in which more than 2,200 municipalities worldwide are currently participating. In the Netherlands, approximately 80 municipalities hold the Fairtrade Municipality title.

As a Fairtrade Municipality, we also contribute to the sustainability agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (Home - SDG Netherlands).

A working group is active in Voorschoten to raise awareness of Fairtrade among our residents and among businesses and organizations that do not yet sell or use Fairtrade products.
