School Transportation

• If your child is unable to travel to school independently due to a disability or impairment.
• If the nearest accessible school is far from your home.
• If the nearest accessible school that aligns with your religious beliefs is far from your home.
• The distance between your child's home address and the school is more than 6 kilometers.
• This refers to transportation between your child's home and the nearest accessible school.

Please note: In secondary school, your child can only use school transportation if the need has been medically determined and your child is unable to travel independently. 

You can apply for the following modes of transportation:

• Public Transportation Reimbursement
• Reimbursement for Public Transportation with an Escort
• Reimbursement for Personal Transportation (Mileage Allowance)
• Taxi transportation. The municipality arranges specialized transportation for your child.

The type of assistance you receive depends on your situation.

• You have chosen the nearest accessible school.
• Your child takes public transportation to a school that is more than 6 kilometers from your home.

• You have chosen the nearest accessible school.
• Your child takes public transportation to a school that is more than 6 kilometers from your home.
• In some cases involving a structural disability, it may be possible to obtain adapted transportation.

• Your child is not eligible for reimbursement for travel on public transportation.
• In some cases involving a structural disability, it may be possible to obtain adapted transportation.

• Your child will only receive reimbursement for travel by public transportation if he or she is traveling with a parent or guardian.
• In some cases, it is possible to arrange for special transportation.

Be sure to submit a fully completed application for the upcoming school year by May 1. If you submit your application in July or August, we cannot guarantee that your child will be able to use adapted transportation during the first three weeks of the new school year. This is because route planning begins in July and cannot be adjusted again until after the second week of September. Until you receive notification of the start date, you will unfortunately need to arrange for an alternative yourself. After submitting your application, you will receive a letter from the municipality with the decision within 8–12 weeks.  

Do you disagree with the municipality’s decision? If so, you can file an appeal within 6 weeks. We will then review your application again. 

To fill out the form, you'll need one or more documents. Exactly which ones depends on the type of school.

It may take some time to get these documents in order—sometimes as long as 8 weeks. So be sure to start the process early.

Examples of documents you may need:

• a letter from the new school (a school statement)
• a letter from your child's treating physician (a medical certificate)
• a letter stating your income (an income statement)

If you don't choose the school that's closest to you, you'll need to include an additional letter:

• a letter explaining why you are choosing a school farther away (a letter of objection)
