School transport service

School transport service is a service provided by the municipality to help get your child from home to school. The municipality decides whether you’ school transport service .

School transport service This program is available to children in (special) elementary school and in special secondary education. The Leiden Regional Cooperation Association may refer your child to another (special) school due to, for example, learning difficulties or a disability. To be eligible for reimbursement from the National Special Education Fund ( school transport service), you should choose the nearest school.

If, for valid reasons, you do not choose the nearest school, we will review your case on a case-by-case basis to determine whether you are eligible for reimbursement for the “ school transport service .”

When can I apply for " school transport service "?

  • If your child cannot travel to school independently due to a disability or impairment.
  • If the nearest accessible school is located far from your home.
  • If the nearest accessible school corresponding to your religious or ideological belief is located far from your home.
  • The distance between your child's home address and the school is more than 6 kilometre.
  • This concerns transport between your child's home and the nearest accessible school.

Please note: In secondary school, your child may only use the “ school transport service ” service if the need has been medically determined and your child is unable to travel independently. 

Forms of transport

You can apply for the following forms of transport:

  • Reimbursement for public transport
  • Reimbursement for public transport with supervision
  • Reimbursement for private transport (kilometre allowance)
  • Taxi transport. The municipality arranges customized transport for your child.

Which form you receive depends on your situation.

Primary school

  • You have chosen the nearest accessible school.
  • Your child takes public transportation to a school that is more than 6, kilometre s from your home.

School for special education (so)

  • You have chosen the nearest accessible school.
  • Your child takes public transportation to a school that is more than 6, kilometre s from your home.
  • In certain cases involving a structural disability, it is possible to receive customized transport.

Secondary education (vo)

  • Your child is not eligible for reimbursement for travelling by public transport.
  • In certain cases involving a structural disability, it is possible to receive customized transport.

School for secondary special education (vso)

  • Your child will only receive reimbursement for travelling by public transport if he or she travels together with a parent/guardian.
  • In some cases, it is possible to obtain adapted transport.

School transport service applications

Health Please make sure to submit a fully completed application for the upcoming school year by May 1. If you submit your application in July or August, we cannot guarantee that your child will be able to use adapted transportation during the first three weeks of the new school year. This is because route planning begins in July and cannot be adjusted again until after the second week of September. Until you receive notification of the start date, you will unfortunately need to arrange for an alternative yourself. After submitting your application, you will receive a letter from the municipality with the decision within 8–12 weeks.  

Do you disagree with the municipality's decision? If so, you can file an objection within 6 weeks. We will then review your application again. 

Which documents do you need for the application?

To complete the form, you will need 1 or more documents. Which ones exactly depends on the type of school.

It may take some time to arrange these documents, sometimes up to 8 weeks. Therefore, make sure to start on time.

Examples of documents you may need:

  • a letter from the new school (a school statement)
  • a letter from your child's healthcare provider (a medical statement)
  • a letter stating your income (an income statement)

Are you choosing a school that is not the closest one? Then you must include an additional letter:

  • a letter explaining why you are choosing a school further away (a letter of objection)
