With an identity card (ID-Map), you can prove who you are (identification). You can also use it to travel to most countries in Europe. You can apply for an identity card by making an appointment with your local municipality. After 6 business days, you can pick up your identity card by making an appointment.

Starting January 4, 2021, your new ID card will have an additional feature. You can use it to log in to government websites, educational institutions, the Health , or your pension fund.

Urgent application

If you need your identity card urgently, you can submit an expedited application. If you apply for the identity card before 12:00, you can collect it after 2 working days. Please note that an additional fee applies for this.

How does it work?

An identity card is valid for 10 years if you are 18 years of age or older. If you are under 18 years of age, an identity card is valid for 5 years.

Secure copy of identity card

Beware of identity fraud. In this type of crime, criminals misuse fake or stolen identity information. With the KopieID app, you can use your smartphone to make a secure copy of your ID card. Don’t have the KopieID app? Then visit the website of the Rijksoverheid to learn how to recognize and prevent identity fraud.

What to do?

  • You must apply for the identity card in person at the municipality where you reside. Children who require their own identity card must also visit the municipality.
  • You must collect your identity card in person. This must be done within 3 months of your application, as your identity card will otherwise expire. Are you also collecting an identity card for your child? Please bring your child with you.
  • Has your identity card expired? You must then hand it in to the municipality.
  • Is your identity card (severely) damaged? You must then apply for a new identity card. You also need to hand in the old identity card to the municipality.

Physical or mental disability

If you are unable to apply for an identity card in person due to a physical or mental disability, a municipal employee can visit you. In case of doubt, the municipality may ask you to provide a medical certificate.

Identity card lost or stolen

  • If your identity card is lost or stolen in NL, you can apply for a new one immediately. During this application, you will sign a Declaration of missing document. You do not need to report this to the police.
  • If you are insured against theft, reporting it to the police is advisable.
  • If you must travel immediately, you can apply for an emergency document from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
  • If you find your old identity card, you are required to return it to the municipality. This identity card is no longer valid.
  • If you lose your identity card abroad, you must report it to the local police. Request a written statement of this report, as you will need it for your insurance. You do not need to report it to the police in the Netherlands.
  • Report to the Dutch embassy or consulate that your identity card has been lost or stolen and apply for an emergency document.
  • You can use the foreign police report to apply for a new identity card at the municipality.
