Splitting a Home
Would you like to subdivide your building into condominium units, and do the units have a rent below the rent liberalization threshold? In that case, you may apply to the municipality for a subdivision permit under Article 22 of the Housing Act.
How does it work?
The municipality determines whether you are allowed to subdivide your home. In making this determination, it takes the following into account:
- the distribution of housing in the municipality
- Subdividing a home should not stand in the way of urban renewal
- whether the home is suitable for subdivision
What should I do?
- You apply for the permit with the municipality.
- Sometimes you may also need an environmental permit. For example, if you’re planning to renovate.
