Proof of Life
With a certificate of life, you can provide written proof that you are alive. You can apply for a certificate of life at your local municipality.
How does it work?
You will need proof of life, for example, if your life insurance company or pension fund requests it.
A certificate of life is valid in:
- The Netherlands
- Aruba
- Curaçao
- Bonaire
- Saint Maarten
- St. Eustatius
- Saba
If you need to prove that you are alive in another country, you should request a certificate of life.
What should I do?
You can request a certificate of life online, in person, or in writing from the municipality.
What do I need?
- valid identification
- DigiD if you are submitting the application online
If you need the proof for a pension fund, you will also need the letter from the pension fund requesting it.
How long does it take?
You'll receive the document right away.
If you requested the certificate online or in writing, it will be mailed to your home. This may take a few days.
Costs
2026:
- Fee for requesting a life certificate: €17.80
- The request is free of charge if the life certificate is needed for pension purposes and you can provide a pension letter confirming this.
