Placing advertising

You cannot simply place advertisements on or attached to a building. For example, the advertisement must not endanger traffic. If you wish to place an advertising sign on a property, you must apply for an environmental licence from the municipality.

This concerns advertisements placed on or attached to a building. DENK for example of hanging signs, banners, and texts or images on walls.

How does it work?

The municipality decides whether you are eligible for the “ licence .” It may deny the “ licence ” because:

  • the advertisement does not fit in the surrounding area
  • the advertisement does not match the building on which it is placed
  • the advertisement distracts road users
  • the advertisement damages the road
  • the advertisement interferes with the maintenance and management of the road

What to do?

You can use the Omgevingsloket online portal at to check whether you need to apply for a “ licence .” You can submit the application online right away. To do so, use DigiD at . Businesses can only submit the application online. To do so, use eHerkenning at .
