Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations

The municipality of Voorschoten encourages the use of electric vehicles. Electric cars are the future because they are clean, quiet, and fuel-efficient. Driving electric vehicles helps make the air cleaner and reduces our dependence on finite and polluting fuels, such as gasoline and diesel. More electric vehicles also mean less noise pollution.

Electric charging stations

The number of electric vehicles in Voorschoten is on the rise. The municipality is encouraging the use of electric cars by installing electric charging stations on municipal property. This number will continue to grow in the future.

The municipality of Voorschoten, together with various other municipalities in the region, is participating in the collective concession for the Southwest Netherlands region for the installation and operation of public charging stations, organized by the municipality of Rotterdam. The concession holder is Equans Infra & Mobility BV. This is the only entity that installs, maintains, and operates charging stations in Voorschoten.

New Charging Stations and Filing an Objection

As of January 1, 2026, the process for determining locations for new charging stations has changed. Previously, residents could request a location, but this is no longer possible. New locations are determined based on charging data from existing stations. If there is sufficient charging activity at a particular location, a new charging station will be added there.

To this end, the municipality is following a procedure to issue a traffic order. Traffic orders are published on the website www.officielebekendmakingen.nl. You can file an objection to a traffic order via the “File an Objection” section. You have 6 weeks to do so from the date the traffic order is published.

Report problems with charging or a malfunction

Are you having trouble charging, or would you like to report a malfunction? Please call the service hotline at 088 3692914. Make sure you have the charging station’s number handy. The technical support service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The technical support number is also posted on the charging station. In many cases, the issue can be resolved remotely. If that’s not possible, a technician will come to the charging station as soon as possible.

Charging with Your Own Electricity

It is not permitted to charge an electric car using your own electricity while the car is parked in a public parking space and is powered by a cable that is run across the sidewalk from your own property. Such a situation may cause a nuisance or lead to dangerous situations for pedestrians. More information on this can be found in the memo: Charging with Your Own Electricity

Don’t have a parking spot on your own property, such as a driveway, garage, or carport? But would you like to charge your car using your own electricity? In some cases, this is possible. If there are public parking spaces along the sidewalk near your home, you can submit a request for a cable trench. You can run your own charging cable through this trench.
