Transporting a deceased person abroad

You can request the documents from the municipality where the person passed away.

Not using a funeral director? Please contact the municipality by phone immediately.

• proof of the cause of death (statement from a physician or medical examiner, or a statement from the public prosecutor)

You will then receive the following documents for the transport of the deceased person:

• death certificate
• permit for burial or cremation (for transport within the Benelux)
• laissez-passer (for transport outside the Benelux)

Application for transport of a deceased person by a funeral director

You can also transport a deceased person from abroad to NL. You will then also need a statement from the competent authority in that country. The Dutch embassy or consulate in that country can assist you with this.
