Changing the use of surname
If you are married, have entered into a registered partnership, are a widow or widower, or are divorced, you can have the use of your surname changed by the municipality. You can then choose from:
- only your own surname
- only your partner's surname
- your partner's surname followed by your own surname
- your own surname followed by your partner's surname
Please note! This is not the same as changing your actual surname because you want the surname of another parent or because your surname has an unusual meaning.
How does it work?
- The last name you choose will be entered into the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). This ensures that other government agencies are also informed and can use the last name you have chosen. You are responsible for notifying other institutions and companies yourself.
- Your passport, identity card or driving licence always states your own name, even if you are married or in a registered partnership. However, you can have your partner's name added to these documents.
What to do?
Submit a request to the municipality. The municipality will then verify whether you are permitted to use a different name. If this is the case, your request will be processed in the GBA.
You can choose from the following registrations of your surname:
- your partner's name followed by your own name
- your own name followed by your partner's name
- only your partner's name
- only your own name
What do I need?
- If you apply online, you will need your DigiD.
- If you submit your application at the desk, you will need a valid proof of identity.
How long does it take?
- When applying online, the municipality will update your surname within 10 working days.
- If you visit in person, the municipality will change your surname immediately.
