Designating a monument

A municipal monument is usually a special building, but it can also be a unique bridge or park. A house or property can also become a monument. You can ask the municipality to designate your property as a municipal monument.

How does it work?

  • Whether your property can become a municipal monument depends on factors such as the architectural style and whether notable people have lived in it.
  • A municipal monument is different from a national monument. National monuments are designated by the Dutch National Heritage Institute ( Rijksoverheid ).

What to do?

You ask the municipality to designate your property as a monument. Please provide the following details:

  • the architect
  • the architectural style
  • the year of construction
  • important previous occupants
  • archaeological finds made in or around your property
  • significant historical events that took place in or around your property

Extra information

If you do not want your property to be designated as a municipal monument, you can submit an objection to the municipality. For example, this applies if you live in the same building as the person who submitted the application to the municipality. Submit your objection within 6 weeks of the announcement of the designation.
