Charity collection

If you want to raise money for a charity, you need a “ licence ” (permit) from the municipality. A distinction is made between national and non-national organizations. National organizations are generally exempt from this requirement; this used to be called a “doorlopende licence ” (permanent permit). Non-national organizations, such as a local association, may only collect donations during the designated period.

How does it work?

The municipality aims to prevent too many collections from taking place simultaneously. It maintains a collection schedule to track when collections are held. The municipality will check whether your collection fits into this schedule.

The municipality assesses your application against the advice of the Central Bureau on Fundraising (CBF). At the CBF, you can view the national collection schedule. You can also view the municipal schedule here. Please check the collection schedule in advance before determining the date for your collection or fundraiser.

What to do?

You can apply for the “ licence ” at city hall.

In your application, you must demonstrate that the funds raised will be spent responsibly for the stated purpose. Please also provide the following information:

the name of the organisation organising the collection
a description of the collection
the period during which you wish to hold the collection

It is advisable to submit your application at least 8 weeks in advance.

How long does it take?

You will be notified within 8 weeks whether you have been granted the “ licence .” If the municipality does not make a decision within this timeframe, you will automatically receive the “ licence ” to conduct fundraising.
