Alien Passport
If you have a valid residence licence, but do not (yet) possess Dutch nationality, you can apply for an alien's passport at the municipality. With an alien's passport, you can travel to all countries except your country of origin.
Alien or refugee
If you have refugee status, you do not apply for an alien's passport. Instead, you should apply for a refugee passport at the municipality.
How does it work?
An alien's passport is valid for a maximum of 3 years. The exact validity period of your alien's passport depends on the duration of your residence licence. You can apply for an alien's passport if you:
- do not have refugee status
- do not have a passport from your country of origin
- live in NL, but do not hold Dutch nationality
- have a residence licence
- enrolled is listed with the municipality where you are applying for the passport
Children require their own alien's passport
Children with a residence permit need their own alien's passport. To apply for one, written authorisation from the parents or a guardian is required.
What to do?
- You must apply for an alien's passport in person at the municipality.
- If you are applying for an alien's passport for your child, please bring your child with you.
- Health Make sure your fingers are clean, because fingerprints will be taken. Children under 12 do not need to have their fingerprints taken.
- You must collect your alien's passport in person. Please do so within 3 months of your application, as the passport will otherwise become invalid.
- If you are picking up an alien's passport for your child, please bring your child with you.
Alien's passport lost or stolen
- You do not need to report this to the police.
- You can immediately apply for a new alien's passport at the municipality. During this application, you will sign a Declaration of Loss.
- If you lose your alien's passport abroad, you must report it to the local police.
What do I need?
- Your valid residence licence.
- a clear passport photograph that is no more than 6 months old at the time of application. This photograph meets the passport photograph requirements.
- Your old alien's passport (if you have one).
- Debit card or cash. You pay directly upon application.
If you are applying for an alien's passport for your child, please also bring the following:
- Written authorisation s from both parents or a guardian. Please use the municipality's form for this purpose.
- Valid proof of identity of both parents or a legal guardian.
How long does it take?
It takes 2 to 4 months for your alien's passport to be ready. The procedure takes this long because the IND and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are involved in the decision regarding your application.
Extra information
If you are unable to provide fingerprints
If the counter employee cannot take fingerprints from 1 or more of your fingers, for example because they are bandaged, they will take fingerprints from fingers where it is possible.
If you are temporarily unable to provide any fingerprints at all, you will receive an alien's passport that is valid for a maximum of 12 months.
If it is physically impossible to provide fingerprints, you do not have to do so. For example, if you are missing fingers or if your fingers are permanently damaged.
