Getting Married Abroad

How wonderful that you’re getting married abroad. It’s important that you be able to prove there that you are not married and do not have a registered partnership with anyone else. You can do this with a certificate of single status or a certificate of eligibility to marry. You can request these certificates from your local municipality.

What should I do?

  • If you live in the Netherlands, you can apply for the certificate at your local municipality.
  • If you are a Dutch citizen living abroad, you can request an extract from the Basic Register of Persons (BRP) from an RNI municipality at .
  • Do you not live in the Netherlands and have you never lived there? If so, request the certificate from the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you will be getting married.

What do I need?

  • A valid form of identification for you and your partner.

The municipality may ask you and your partner to provide the following documents:

  • A recent copy of the birth certificate.
  • If you have been married before: a divorce decree or death certificate.
  • If you or your partner lives abroad: a document from that country stating your place of residence, nationality, and marital status.

Foreign deeds or other foreign documents must be written in Dutch, English, French, or German. If this is not the case, you must first have the documents translated by a certified translator in the Netherlands. In some cases, you may need to have foreign deeds legalized in the country of origin. Check with your local municipality.
