If you want to sell goods or services on the street or door-to-door, you may do so only if the municipality permits it. You may need to apply for a permit to do so.
How does it work?
With a street vendor permit, you may sell your goods or services in public places such as public roads, along public waterways, or door-to-door.
Street vending means selling your goods in different locations each time—not at a fixed location. Examples of street vendors include ice cream vendors or produce vendors with mobile carts. The following situations are not considered street vending:
- You are distributing written or printed materials in the exercise of your freedom of speech.
- You are a retailer and you deliver goods to a buyer's home.
- You sell your goods from a fixed location or at a market. In that case, you need a market permit or a fixed-location permit.
What should I do?
Check with the municipality to see if you are allowed to sell goods on the street, and where and when you may do so. You will be told right away whether you need to apply for a permit.
