Driver's License

If you renew your driver's license online, you can pick up your new license in just 2 business days.  

Please note! You can only apply online if you meet the following requirements: 

• You are registered in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP) of the municipality of Voorschoten
• The application is for a driver's license renewal or an addition of a category
• You had a digital photo taken by anRDW-certified photographer
• You have received confirmation from the RDW that you can apply for your driver's license online
• You have an activatedDigiD app that has been used to perform aone-time verification of your ID. This must be a Dutch ID card issued on or after March 13, 2021. The one-time verification requires an Android smartphone with an NFC reader (Android version 4.4 or higher) or an iPhone (model 7 or higher with iOS 13).

You need a driver's license to drive a moped, car, truck, tractor, or other motor vehicle.

How long is my driver's license valid?

The validity of your Class B driver's license (passenger car) depends on your age.

• Are you under 65 years of age? If so, your driver's license is valid for 10 years.
• Are you between the ages of 65 and 70? If so, your driver's license is valid until your 75th birthday.
• Are you between 70 and 75 years old? If so, your driver's license is valid for 5 years.
• Are you over 75 years old? If so, your driver's license is valid for a maximum of 5 years.
• A Class C driver's license (truck) and a Class D driver's license (bus) are valid for up to 5 years.

Driver's License for Youth Under 18

You can get your driver's license starting at age 17. Until you turn 18, you must drive with a coach sitting next to you. For example, one of your parents can be your coach. You may have up to 5 coaches.

When do I need a Health Certificate?

Sometimes you’ll need a Health Certificate. The CBR uses this to assess whether you’re mentally and physically capable of driving. This is important for traffic safety.

You will need a Health Certificate in the following situations:

• You are applying for a practical exam for the first time, or you want to add a category to your driver's license.
• You want to obtain or renew a Class C and/or D driver's license.
• You have a medical condition.
• Your driver's license has been confiscated.
• You are 75 years old or older.

When do I need a medical examination?

You must undergo a medical examination before applying for a driver's license in the following situations:

• You have a medical condition.
• You are 75 years of age or older, and your driver's license is about to expire.
• You need a driver's license for a truck or bus.

Start your medical exam well before your driver's license expires.
If you don't start on time, your driver's license may expire before you've been examined. You will then be (temporarily) prohibited from driving.

To apply for your driver's license, you must have passed your driving test at the CBR.

Driver's License for Youth Under 18

• Coaches must register with the Road Transport Agency (RDW).
• After the coaches have registered, request a coach passat .
• Once you have received your companion pass, you can apply for your driver's license at city hall

Health Declaration

The CBR uses the Health Declaration to assess whether you are mentally and physically capable of driving. This is important for traffic safety. You can fill out this Health Declaration online at the CBR’s website: . You can also request the form from your local municipality. You will need a Health Declaration in the following situations:

• You are applying for a practical exam for the first time, or you want to add a category to your driver's license.
• You want to obtain or renew a Class C and/or D driver's license.
• You have a medical condition.
• Your driver's license has been confiscated.
• You are 75 years old or older.

Medical Examination

You must undergo a medical examination before applying for a driver's license if you:

• have a medical condition
• You are 75 years of age or older and your driver's license is about to expire
• you need a driver's license for a truck or bus

Lost or Stolen Driver's License

Have you lost your driver's license, or was it stolen?

• In that case, please report it online to the RDW first at ; this is free. You will need a DigiD to do so. If you don’t have a DigiD, please report the loss to your local municipality; there is a fee for this.
• Once you have reported the loss or misuse to the RDW, this cannot be reversed. If you find your driver’s license, you must still apply for a new one. In that case, turn in your recovered driver’s license to your municipality or to the RDW. 

• A clear, recent passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the date of application. This passport photo meets the requirements listed at .
• Cash or a debit card. You pay immediately when you submit your application.
• When applying for your first driver's license: a valid passport or a valid ID card.
• When renewing your driver's license: the driver's license you already have. If it is no longer valid, please also bring a valid passport or valid ID card.

Pick up your driver's license

You must pick up your driver's license in person at city hall. Be sure to bring your old driver's license with you.

Driver's licenses now have a new chip. You can use this chip to log in to DigiD. Was your driver's license issued after July 1, 2023? If so, you will receive a letter from DigiD within 5 business days of picking up your license. This letter will contain a PIN code, which you can use to activate the login feature.

Beginner's Driver's License

Anyone who gets their first driver's license is a beginner. It doesn't matter how old you are, or what type of vehicle the license is for. How long you're considered a beginner driver depends on your age.

• Individuals aged 18 or older are considered novice drivers for 5 years. 
• 17-year-olds are considered novice drivers for 5 years if they hold a Class B driver's license. If they only hold an AM driver's license, they are considered novice drivers for 7 years. 
• 16-year-olds have been novice drivers for 7 years.

New drivers are issued a provisional driver's license. This is a standard driver's license, but it includes a penalty point system for serious traffic violations. For more information, visit the Dutch government's website.

Military Driver's License

A Dutch military driver's license is not valid outside the military. However, you can exchange your military driver's license for a regular driver's license at your local municipality. You must do so within 3 years of the military driver's license being issued.

Foreign Driver's License

With a valid foreign driver's license, you may drive in the Netherlands for a certain period of time. This depends on the country where your driver's license was issued. For more information, visit theRDW website at.

Code 95

• Code 95 must be listed on your driver's license if you want to drive a bus or truck for work.
• This code demonstrates that you are qualified for the job.
• Did you pass the exams and tests? If so, apply for a new driver's license at city hall.
• Code 95 will appear on your new driver's license after category C and/or D.
• Were you born before July 1, 1955?If so, new rules will apply to you as of December 1, 2020.
