Registering a stillborn child

When a child is stillborn, it is a great emotional loss. If you wish, you can have your child registered in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). This is not required. You must submit your request for registration to the municipality where you live.

With this registration, your stillborn child will be listed for you to view at MijnOverheid.nl, , and on an extract from the BRP. 

How does it work?

You can submit the request if you were living in the Netherlands at the time of the birth and were registered as a resident of the municipality ( enrolled ) in the Municipal Register ( BRP).
It does not matter when your child was born or how long the pregnancy lasted.
You can only register your child on your own behalf at BRP. Because this is a very personal matter, you cannot do this on behalf of the other parent.

What to do?

You submit a request to the municipality where you live.
To register your child, a birth certificate (stillborn) or a certificate of a stillborn child is required. If you do not have such a certificate, you can still have it drawn up in the municipality where your child was born.
It may happen that your child’s names are not listed on the birth certificate (stillborn) or the certificate of a stillborn child. In that case, you should provide the names when submitting your request for registration at BRP. Parents can therefore each choose a different name. That is not a problem at all in this situation.

What do I need?

A birth certificate (stillborn) or a certificate of a stillborn child.
A valid ID.

Your child was born abroad

Documents regarding the birth, such as a certificate drawn up abroad stating that your child was stillborn.
If it is difficult for you to obtain these documents, please inform the municipality. Because this is a very personal situation, the rules are applied with leniency and understanding. You can then make a declaration regarding the birth of your child at the municipality.

How long does it take?

You will receive a response from the municipality within 4 weeks of submitting your request.

Extra information

Apart from yourself, only the registrar of civil status can view this registration. Other public authorities will not receive any data regarding your stillborn child.
If you moved abroad after the birth of your child, you should submit your request to the last Dutch municipality where you were registered enrolled.
