Releasing Pigeons

If you want to let your pigeons out, keep in mind that pigeons are not always allowed to fly freely. In the spring, wild pigeons often cause damage to farmers’ fields. For this reason, the municipality may designate a period during which you must keep your pigeons indoors so that hunters can cull the wild pigeon population. This period may last a week, or it may be, for example, one day per week. The municipality consults with racing pigeon associations in advance regarding this matter.

If you want to release your pigeons during the same period, you will need an exemption from the municipality.

How does it work?

Would you like to release pigeons? Please keep in mind that you cannot release pigeons at any time you choose. The province of South Holland sets the times when it is prohibited to release pigeons.

For details on the ban, please refer to the provincial ordinance on the mandatory confinement of carrier pigeons: www.zuid-holland.nl

What should I do?

You must apply for the exemption with the municipality. Please include the following information with your application:

  • the date and time(s) when you want to release your pigeons
  • the number of pigeons

How long does it take?

You will be notified within 8 weeks whether you have been granted the exemption.

File an objection
