School fees, contribution

Students between the ages of 18 and 30 can receive a contribution with which you can purchase school supplies, for example. This is called the student allowance. You apply for this allowance from the Education Executive Agency (DUO).

How does it work?

The allowance is a grant; you do not have to repay it. The amount you receive depends on your parents’ income and whether you still live at home with them. You are eligible for the allowance if you meet the following Requirements :

  • You are following a full-time study programme in the Netherlands in secondary education (vo), secondary special education (vso) or general secondary education for adults (vavo).
  • You are between 18 and 30 years old. Or if you are in secondary special education, between 18 and 20 years old.
  • You have Dutch nationality. If you do not have Dutch nationality, you may still be eligible for an allowance in some cases. Check the DUO nationality chart to see if this applies to you.

What do I need?

To apply for the allowance, you need:

  • your DigiD
  • details of your school and education
