School fees, contribution

Students between the ages of 18 and 30 may be eligible for a grant that can be used, for example, to purchase school supplies. This is called the student grant. You can apply for this grant through the Education Executive Agency (DUO).

How does it work?

The allowance is a grant; you do not have to repay it. The amount you receive depends on your parents’ income and whether you still live at home with them. You are eligible for the allowance if you meet the following conditions:

  • You are enrolled in a full-time program in the Netherlands in secondary education (vo), special secondary education (vso), or general adult education (vavo).
  • You are between 18 and 30 years old. Or, if you are enrolled in VSO, you are between 18 and 20 years old.
  • You are a Dutch citizen. If you are not a Dutch citizen, you may still be eligible for financial assistance in some cases. Check the DUO’s nationality chart at to see if this applies to you.

What do I need?

To apply for the allowance, you will need:

  • your DigiD
  • Information about your school and program
