Soil pollution remediation

If you own a plot of land and soil research shows that the land is contaminated, you must have it cleaned. Only officially approved companies are permitted to remediate soil contamination.

How does it work?

More information about soil contamination or soil research can be found on the website of the Omgevingsdienst West-Holland.

What to do?

  • If you discover that your land is contaminated, you must report this to the municipality or province.
  • Contaminated soil must be cleaned by a certified company. Ask the municipality which companies you can engage for this purpose.

Conducting soil research

  • If you are purchasing a house or a plot of land, it is important to check with the municipality beforehand regarding any potential soil contamination.
  • Ask your real estate agent or appraiser for advice on whether additional soil research is necessary. Also, inquire whether an oil tank was ever installed in the ground. Most contamination in private land is caused by an oil tank in the garden.
  • If you are planning to build or renovate, you must have soil research conducted. You will need this research when applying for your environmental licence to build or renovate.
