Deletion of privacy-sensitive personal data
The municipality maintains personal data on all residents in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). The municipality needs this information when, for example, you get married or when your passport expires. If necessary, the municipality may also share your information with other government agencies, such as the Tax Authority or the police, or with organizations such as pension funds and housing authorities.
You may only request that information regarding your adoption, a child you have given up for adoption, or your gender reassignment be removed from the BRP .
How does it work?
If you have been adopted, you can have the following details removed:
- The name you had before the adoption.
- The names of your biological parents or guardians in the period prior to the adoption.
- The nationality you held before the adoption.
- Information about the municipality, the address wher enrolled , and your stay in the municipality during the period prior to the adoption.
- Your possible departure from the Netherlands.
If you have changed your gender, you can have the following details removed:
- Details concerning your name.
- Details concerning your gender.
- Use of your spouse's, registered partner's, or former partner's surname.
What to do?
- Ask the municipality to remove your details.
- Please specify which particular details are concerned.
- If you are under 16 years of age, your parents must submit this request to the municipality.
What do I need?
- documents relating to the adoption or gender change
- your valid identity document
How long does it take?
The municipality will remove your details within 4 weeks and send you a letter as soon as this has been done.
