Moped License

You must apply for your moped driving licence in person at the municipality by appointment.

Urgent application

If you need your moped license quickly, you can submit an expedited application. If you apply for the license before 12:00 p.m., you can pick it up after two business days. However, this does cost extra. You do not need to make an appointment for an expedited application, but you can stop by the Civil Affairs counters during their “ opening hours .”

How does it work?

You need a moped driving licence to drive a:

moped
scooter
light-moustachefiets
microcar
quad
trike EN
speed-pedelec (bicycle with electric pedal assistance capable of reaching a maximum speed of 45 kilometre per hour)

What to do?

You can take the theory exam for the moped driving licence starting from the age of 15.5. From the age of 16, you are allowed to take driving lessons and the practical exam.

No driving lessons and driving exam required

If you hold a car driving licence (driving licence B) or a motorcycle driving licence (driving licence A), the moped driving licence (driving licence AM) is automatically added to your driving licence.

Moped driving licence lost or stolen

Have you lost your driving licence or has it been stolen?

Please report this online to the RDW first. You will need a DigiD for this.
Do you not have a DigiD? Please report the loss to the municipality instead.
Afterwards, you can apply for a new driving licence at the municipality. Please bring a colour passport photograph and a valid proof of identity.

What do I need?

A clear, likeness-resembling passport photo taken no more than 6 months ago at the time of application. This photo must meet the passport photo requirements.
Money or a debit card. Payment is made directly upon application.
When applying for your first moped driving licence: a valid passport or a valid identity card.
When renewing your moped driving licence: the moped driving licence you already hold. If this is no longer valid, please also bring a valid passport or a valid identity card.

Collecting your moped driving licence

You must pick up your moped license in person at city hall. A Make an appointment is not required. Be sure to bring your old moped license with you, if you have one.

How long does it take?

You can collect your driving licence from the municipality by appointment after 6 working days.
If you have submitted an urgent application before 12:00, you can collect it after two working days.

Extra information

Severe traffic violations on a moped also count towards the novice driver's licence. More information about this can be found on the CBR website.

If you have been declared unfit to drive for licence A or B for medical reasons, category AM of the moped driving licence remains valid on your driving licence.
