Public housing, certificate of urgent housing need

If you are in an emergency situation and need housing immediately, you can apply for a certificate of urgency. With a certificate of urgency, you will be given priority in the search for public housing. For example, you may need a certificate of urgency if:

  • your relationship has ended and you—along with your child(ren)—have to move out
  • there are financial problems that aren't your fault and that you couldn't have prevented
  • you are seriously ill and can no longer live in your home
  • Your house is being demolished

How does it work?

Strict conditions apply to a declaration of urgent housing need. For example:

  • This emergency is not your fault. Are you facing rent arrears or a forced sale? In that case, you will only receive an urgent housing certificate if the situation is beyond your control. For example, because you lost your job. Or if your partner—who was paying for everything with his or her salary—has left.
  • You were unable to prevent the problem.
  • You've done everything you can to find a home.

The municipality always investigates whether you are truly in an emergency situation. Sometimes a medical examination is required.

What should I do?

Make an appointment with the housing authority. They will then let you know if you are eligible to apply for priority housing. If so, please provide the following information:

  • Why you urgently need housing;
  • Names of individuals or organizations that can confirm your situation.
