Placing a slot machine
A slot machine is a machine with which you can win money, such as a fruit machine. This is not possible with a skill gaming machine. DENK of a pinball machine or video games.
- If you want to install a slot machine in your business, you need an operating permit. You can apply for this licence with your local municipality.
- You do not need a presence licence for a skill gaming machine.
How does it work?
- Only catering establishments and amusement arcades are permitted to place a slot machine.
- The owner of the slot machine must hold an operation licence from the Netherlands Gaming Authority.
Hospitality industry
If you wish to place a slot machine in your catering establishment, the following additional rules apply:
- You hold a valid operation licence for your catering establishment.
- You hold a valid alcohol licence.
- Only catering activities take place in your establishment.
What to do?
- You apply for a presence licence from the municipality.
- If you are also the owner of the slot machine, you can simultaneously apply for an operation licence through the municipality.
- Your application must at least state:
- how many slot machines you wish to place in your establishment
- the name and address of your establishment
- the name and address of the owner of the slot machine
- Always report any changes to the municipality. For example, in the event of a change of ownership of the machine or if you wish to place more or fewer machines in your establishment.
How long does it take?
Within eight weeks, you will receive notification from the municipality as to whether you will receive the “ licence .”
Costs
- € 226.50 (2026) for the first slot machine
- € 136.00 (2026) for each subsequent slot machine
Additional information
Are you a provider of high-risk games of chance in casinos or amusement arcades? As of October 1, 2021, you must be connected to the Central Register for Exclusion from Games of Chance (Cruks). Before a player can gamble, you must verify whether the individual in question is registered in this database.
If that is the case, you must not admit the player.
