Install a Slot Machine

A slot machine is a machine that lets you win money, such as a fruit machine. You can't do that with a skill-based machine. Think of a pinball machine or video games.

  • If you want to install a slot machine in your business, you need an operating permit. You can apply for this permit from the municipality.
  • You do not need an occupancy permit for an arcade machine.

How does it work?

  • Only restaurants, bars, and arcades are permitted to install slot machines.
  • The owner of the slot machine must have an operating license from the Gaming Authority.

Hospitality Industry

If you want to install a slot machine in your hospitality business, the following additional rules apply:

  • You have a valid operating license for your hospitality business.
  • You have a valid liquor license.
  • Your hospitality business is used exclusively for hospitality-related activities.

What should I do?

  • You apply for a residence permit from the municipality.
  • If you also own the slot machine, you can apply for an operating license through the municipality at the same time.
  • When submitting your application, be sure to include the following information:
    • how many slot machines you want to install in your establishment
    • the name and address of your business
    • the name and address of the owner of the slot machine
  • Always notify the municipality if anything changes. For example, if the vending machine has a new owner, or if you want to install more or fewer vending machines in your business.

How long does it take?

Within eight weeks, you will receive a response from the municipality regarding whether you will be granted the permit.

Costs

  • €226.50 (2026) for the first gaming machine
  • €136.00 (2026) for each additional gaming machine

Additional Information

Are you a provider of high-risk games of chance in casinos or slot machine parlors? If so, as of October 1, 2021, you must be connected to the Central Register for Gambling Exclusion (Cruks). Before a player can gamble, you must check whether that person is registered in this registry.
If so, you may not allow the player to gamble.
