Special assistance

Special assistance is intended for extraordinary expenses. These are extra costs incurred due to illness, a disability, or another reason. For example, legal aid costs or moving expenses.

These are expenses that do not fall under normal living costs, which you cannot pay for yourself and are not reimbursed (for example, by your Health insurance). You can apply for special assistance through the municipality.

How does it work?

The municipality will assess whether you are eligible for special assistance. The municipality does this based on the following questions:

  • Are you actually going to incur these costs?
  • Are the costs necessary, for example for medical reasons?
  • Are you unable to pay the costs (in full) yourself?
  • Is there no other organisation that reimburses the costs, such as your health insurance company?

How much special assistance can I receive?

This depends on your income and assets. Assets include savings or owning a home, for example. The municipality also reviews the income and assets of your family members. Sometimes you must pay part of the costs yourself.

Can I get a loan?

For certain expenses, you can obtain a loan from the Municipal Credit Bank (Gemeentelijke Kredietbank). For example, for items that last a long time, such as beds and flooring. Are you unable to obtain a loan there? Then the municipality may provide you with a loan.

Extra information

If you incur the same costs over an extended period, you can apply for them all at once. For example, for travel expenses related to prolonged hospital treatment.

Please note: Keep all bills and receipts safe! You will only receive special assistance if you can demonstrate that you actually incurred the costs.
