Special Assistance

Special assistance is intended to cover special expenses. These are additional expenses incurred due to illness, a disability, or another reason. For example, expenses for legal assistance or moving costs.

These are expenses that are not considered part of the normal cost of living, that you cannot pay for yourself, and for which you do not receive reimbursement (for example, from health insurance). You can apply for special assistance through your municipality.

How does it work?

The municipality will determine whether you are eligible for special assistance. It will do so by considering the following questions:

  • Are you really going to incur those costs?
  • Are the costs necessary, for example, for medical reasons?
  • Are you unable to pay the costs (in full) yourself?
  • Isn't there another organization that will cover the costs, such as your health insurance provider?

How much special assistance can I receive?

That depends on your income and assets. Assets include, for example, savings or a home you own. The municipality also considers the income and assets of your family members. Sometimes you’ll have to pay part of the costs yourself.

Can I get a loan?

You can get a loan from the Municipal Credit Bank to cover certain expenses. For example, for durable goods such as beds and carpeting. If you are unable to get a loan from the Municipal Credit Bank, the municipality may be able to provide you with a loan.

Additional Information

If you have to incur the same expenses over an extended period, you can submit a single claim for them. For example, travel expenses for a long-term hospital treatment.

Please note: Be sure to keep all bills and receipts in a safe place! You will only receive special assistance if you can prove that you have actually incurred the expenses.
