Postal address
If you do not have a permanent residential address in the Netherlands, you can temporarily enrol at someone else’s address or at an institution. This is called a mailing address. From then on, you will receive your mail at this address. You can apply for this mailing address at the municipality.
How does it work?
The person or organization listed a enrolled s on the mailing address is referred to as the “mailing address provider.” The mailing address provider is responsible for ensuring that you receive your mail from the government. Examples include:
- letters
- tax forms
- a voting pass
- a subpoena
Who can apply for a postal address
- The individual in question (the person who will be living in a facility, or who does not have a residential address)
- Parents, guardians, and caregivers of young people up to age 16 who need a mailing address.
Applying for a postal address for someone else
- A partner (married or in a registered partnership) can apply for a postal address for the other partner if they have been authorized in writing to do so by that partner
- Adult children can apply for a postal address for a parent if they have been authorized to do so by that parent
In addition, the following persons can also apply for a postal address for someone else:
- Any adult acting on behalf of a person who has authorized him or her in writing to do so.
- The director of the facility where you will be living.
What to do?
- You apply for a postal address at the municipality of the person providing the postal address. Please indicate why you need a postal address.
- If the municipality approves, you will receive all mail from the municipality and other public authorities at this postal address.
- Health Be sure to provide your mailing address to other agencies as well.
In the event of a designation by the municipality, you only need to bring your valid identity document.
What do I need?
- your valid identity document
- a signed, written declaration ( authorisation ) from the person providing the mailing address
- identity document (or a copy thereof) of the person providing the postal address

How long does it take?
The municipality will process your registration in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP) on the date of registration.
