Correcting Incorrect Personal Information
The municipality maintains records of its residents in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). If your personal information is not recorded correctly, you can ask the municipality to correct it. You can check your information on MijnOverheid at .
In addition to your first names, last name, gender, and citizen service number (BSN), the BRP contains information about your:
- parents
- nationality
- marriage or registered partnership
- death
- registration in the BRP
- place of residence (address)
- children
- residence permit (if you are from another country)
- Parental Authority and Guardianship
- travel document (passport and/or ID card)
- right to vote
What should I do?
- You are asking the municipality to update your information. This is called a correction request.
- Show that your information is incorrect. For example, by providing a letter from the municipality that contains incorrect information about you. Or by taking a screenshot of your information as it appears on MijnOverheid at .
What do I need?
- your valid ID
- a document containing your incorrect information
- an official document containing the correct information, such as a marriage certificate
How long does it take?
- The municipality will correct the incorrect information within 4 weeks.
- The municipality will send you a letter once your information has been updated.
- Even if the municipality is unable or not authorized to update your information, you will receive a letter regarding this.
If you disagree with the decision regarding your request, you can file an appeal with the municipality.
