Affidavit or sworn statement

The municipality maintains records of its residents in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). These records must be accurate. For this reason, the municipality obtains this information from official documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or divorce decrees.

You can make a sworn statement or give a pledge to the municipality if:

  • your information in the BRP is incorrect or missing, and
  • You do not have any other document to prove your correct information

Difference Between a Sworn Statement and a Pledge

If you are a person of faith, you make a sworn statement. You then conclude with the words: “So help me God Almighty.” In all other cases, you make a promise. You conclude with the words: “I promise.”

What should I do?

  • Please contact the municipality to prepare the statement under oath or affirmation.
  • The municipality will first check to see if there is another document that contains your information.
  • If there is no other document, choose whether you want to make a sworn statement or give an affirmation.
  • You must make the statement under oath or take the oath at the municipal office.

  • your valid ID
  • documents that specify what information is involved (if you have them)
