Declaration under oath or affirmation

The municipality maintains records of its residents in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). This information must be accurate. For this reason, the municipality obtains this information from official documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or divorce decrees.

You can make a declaration under oath or make an affirmation at the municipality if:

  • your information in the BRP is incorrect or missing, and
  • you have no other document to prove your correct details

Difference between a declaration under oath and an affirmation

You make a declaration under oath if you are religious. You then conclude with the words: "So truly help me God Almighty." In all other cases, you make an affirmation. You conclude with the words: "I solemnly promise."

What to do?

  • Please contact the municipality to prepare for the declaration under oath or affirmation.
  • The municipality will first investigate whether there is another document available that confirms your details.
  • If no other document exists, you can choose whether to make a statement under oath or a solemn promise.
  • You make the statement under oath or the solemn promise at the municipality.
