Excavation Notice

If you plan to excavate using machinery, you are legally required to submit an excavation notification to the Land Registry in advance. By doing so:

  • helps you prevent excavation damage and dangerous situations in the surrounding area
  • You help ensure the engraver's safety

For an area measuring 500 by 500 meters or smaller, a single excavation notification is sufficient. For larger areas, submit multiple notifications or opt for a route notification. 

How does it work?

After submitting the excavation notice, you will receive digital information about the location of underground cables and pipes. You should use this information to ensure that excavation is carried out with care. The information must be available on-site while the excavation work is taking place.

If a “pipeline carrying hazardous substances” or a high-value utility network is located within the excavation area, the utility operator may require precautionary measures.

What should I do?

You must file the report with the Land Registry.

  • For a one-time excavation notification, please use the KLIC Excavation Notification form at .
  • If you submit reports on a regular basis, you must register as a Kadaster-KLIC customer and use My Kadaster at .

If the excavation site is located in a security zone, a different procedure applies.

How long does it take?

You must report mechanical excavation work no earlier than twenty and no later than two business days before it begins.

Additional Information

If you do not yet know when you will be digging and need a little more time to prepare, submit a Preliminary Inquiry at . Please note: you may not begin digging based on the information you receive in response to a Preliminary Inquiry. Once the start date of the excavation work is known, you must still file an excavation notice. It is therefore advisable to submit an excavation notification at least twenty days before the start of the work.
