How long is my passport valid? 

• Passport for those 18 years of age or older: 10 years
• Passport valid until age 17: 5 years
• Business passport: 10 years
• Second passport: 2 years

Business Passport

If you travel frequently (for example, for work), you can apply for a business passport. This is a regular passport, but it has twice as many pages for stamps.

Second passport

You can apply for a second passport if you:

• traveling to various countries for which you must apply for a visa
• visits countries that are in conflict with one another.

If you wish to apply for a second passport, the following conditions apply:

• Your current passport is valid for at least another 6 months.
• You can prove that you need the second passport.

• You must apply for a passport in person at city hall.
• If you are applying for a passport for your child, please bring your child with you.
• Your fingerprints will be recorded in your passport. Make sure your fingers are clean.
• Children under the age of 12 are not required to provide fingerprints.
• You must pick up your passport in person.
• If you are picking up a passport for your child, please bring your child with you.
• If you want to keep your old passport, you must specifically request to do so. Otherwise, your old passport will be destroyed.

Physical or intellectual disability

If you are unable to apply for a passport in person due to a physical or mental disability, a municipal employee can come to your home. If there is any doubt, the municipality will ask you to provide a medical certificate.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints due to a temporary physical disability, you will receive a passport that is valid for 1 year. If your disability is permanent, you will receive a passport that is valid for 10 years.

Lost or Stolen Passport

• If your passport is lost or stolen in the Netherlands, you can apply for a new passport immediately. When you submit this application , you will sign a Declaration of Loss. You do not need to file a police report.
• If you have theft insurance, it is advisable to file a police report.
• If you need to travel immediately, you can apply for an emergency passportwith the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
• If you find your old passport, you are required to turn it in to the municipality. This passport is no longer valid.
• If you lose your passport while abroad, file a report with the local police. Ask for written confirmation of this. You will need this for your insurance. In the Netherlands, you do not need to file a report with the Dutch police.
• Report the loss or theft of your passport to the Dutch embassy or consulate and apply for an emergency passport.
• With the foreign police report, you can apply for a new passport at the municipal office.

• A clear, well-defined passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the date of application and that meets the passport photo requirements at .
• All passports and ID cards you still have, even if they have expired.
• If you are applying for a second passport, please bring proof that you need the second passport.
• If your passport is lost or stolen while you are abroad, please bring the police report issued by the foreign authorities.
• Debit card. You pay immediately when you submit your request. If, due to circumstances, you can only pay by contactless payment , please indicate this when scheduling your appointment online.

Children up to age 18

Minors who wish to apply for a travel document must obtain permission from the person(s) with parental authority.

Consent is required in the following situations:

1. A child who is under 12 years of age at the time of applying for an ID card;
2. A child who is under 18 at the time of applying for a passport;
3. An adult who has been placed under guardianship

Who should sign? Authorized person(s):

• Both parents, if they exercise joint parental authority (Note: This also applies if the parents are divorced, unless otherwise determined by the court);
• Mother, when she is the sole holder of parental authority;
• Father, when he is the sole holder of parental authority;
• The authority exercising jurisdiction;
• To do this, use the municipality’sWritten Consent Form. You can also both sign the form on the spot; in that case, you won’t need to bring a completed form with you.
• Valid identification documents (no copies) for both parents or the person who has custody of the child.
• If you, as a parent with legal custody of the child, will not be attending the application appointment, please sign theonline consent form in advance using DigiD.
• Children must be present in person when applying for and picking up their passport.
• At least one parent or guardian must be present when submitting the application.
• A clear, recent passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the date of application. This passport photo meets the passport photo requirements.
• All passports and ID cards you still have for your child, even if they have expired.
• Debit card. You pay immediately when you submit your request. If, due to circumstances, you can only pay by cash, please indicate this when scheduling your appointment online.

You can pick up your passport after 6 business days. If you submitted an expedited application before 12:00 p.m. that morning, you can pick up your passport after 2 business days.

If you no longer have your old passport and do not have any other form of identification, the municipality will conduct an investigation to verify your identity. As a result, it may take longer for you to receive your passport.

• If you do not have Dutch citizenship, you may be eligible for a refugee passport or an alien passport.
• If you are under guardianship, you need permission from your guardian to apply for a passport.
• If you change your name, you must apply for a new passport.
• If you change your gender, you must apply for a new passport.
