Passport

How long is my passport valid? 

• Passport for ages 18 and older: 10 years
• Passport up to 17 years of age: 5 years
• Business passport: 10 years
• Second passport: 2 years

Business passport

If you travel frequently (for example for work), you can apply for a business passport. This is a regular passport, but it has twice as many pages for stamps.

Second passport

You can apply for a second passport if you:

• travel to different countries for which you need to apply for a visa
• are visiting countries that are in conflict with each other.

If you wish to apply for a second passport, the following requirements apply: Requirements:

• Your current passport is still valid for at least 6 months.
• You can prove that you need the second passport.

• You apply for a passport in person at the municipality.
• When applying for a passport for your child, please bring your child along.
• Your fingerprints will be recorded in your passport. Health for clean fingers.
• Children under 12 years of age do not need to provide fingerprints.
• You collect your passport in person.
• When collecting a passport for your child, please bring your child along.
• If you wish to keep your old passport, you must specifically request this. Otherwise, your old passport will be destroyed.

Physical or mental disability

If you are unable to apply for a passport in person due to a physical or mental disability, a municipal employee can visit you. In case of doubt, the municipality may ask you to provide a medical certificate.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints due to a temporary physical disability, you will receive a passport valid for 1 year. If your disability is permanent, you will receive a passport valid for 10 years.

Passport lost or stolen

• If your passport is lost or stolen in the Netherlands, you can apply for a new passport immediately. As part of this application, you must sign a Declaration of Loss. You are not required to report the loss to the police.
• If you are insured against theft, reporting it to the police is advisable.
• If you need to travel immediately, you can apply for an emergency passport at the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
• If you find your old passport, you are required to surrender it to the municipality. This passport is no longer valid.
• If you lose your passport abroad, you must report it to the local police. Request a written statement of this. You will need this for your insurance. You do not need to report it to the Dutch police upon return to the Netherlands.
• Report the loss or theft of your passport to the Dutch embassy or consulate and apply for an emergency passport.
• You can use the foreign police report to apply for a new passport at the municipality.

• A likeness-bearing passport photo that is no older than 6 months at the time of application and complies with the passport photo requirements.
• All passports and identity Maps that you still have, even if they have expired.
• If you are applying for a second passport, please bring proof that you need the second passport.
• If your passport was lost or stolen abroad, you must bring the foreign police report.
• Debit card. Payment is made directly upon application. Are you only able to pay in cash due to circumstances? Please mention this when scheduling your appointment online.

Children under 18 years of age

minor Children who wish to apply for a travel document need authorisation from the person(s) who has/have parental authority.

authorisation is required in the following situations:

1. A child who is under 12 years of age when applying for an identity Map;
2. A child who is under 18 when applying for a passport;
3. An adult under legal guardianship

Who must sign? Person(s) with parental authority:

• Both parents if they share parental authority (Please note! Also if the parents are divorced unless otherwise determined by the court);
• Mother, when she alone holds parental authority;
• Father, when he alone holds parental authority;
• The authority exercising custody;
• Please use the municipality's Written authorisation form for this. Alternatively, both of you can sign on-site, meaning you do not need to bring a completed form.
• Valid proof of identity (no copies) of both parents or of the person who has custody of the child.
• Are you, as a parent with custody of the child, unable to attend the application appointment? If so, sign the Online authorisation form in advance using DigiD.
• Children must be present themselves when applying for and collecting their passport.
• At least one parent or guardian must be present during the application.
• A recent, accurate likeness passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the application. This passport photo must meet the passport photo requirements.
• All passports and identity cards you still have belonging to your child, even if they have expired.
• Debit card. Payment is made immediately upon application. Are you only able to pay in cash due to circumstances? Please indicate this when scheduling your appointment digitally.

You can collect your passport after 6 working days. If you submitted an expedited application in the morning before 12:00, you can collect your passport after 2 working days.

If you no longer have your old passport and lack any other form of identification, the municipality will conduct an investigation to establish your identity. This may delay the issuance of your passport.

• If you do not hold Dutch nationality, you may be eligible for a Refugee Passport or an Alien's Passport.
• If you are under guardianship, you will need authorisation from your guardian to apply for a passport.
• If you change your name, you must apply for a new passport.
• If you change your gender, you must apply for a new passport.

Applying from abroad

Dutch nationals living abroad can apply for a passport at a large number of Dutch diplomatic missions, such as consulates and embassies, or at one of the border municipalities in NL. Such applications involve many different documents.
