Holding a demonstration or protest
In the Netherlands, anyone is allowed to organize a demonstration or protest. This is a fundamental right. If you wish to demonstrate in a public place, you must notify the municipality at least 48 hours in advance. This allows for a timely assessment of whether any measures are necessary—for example, regarding traffic and safety.
How does it work?
It is important that the demonstration does not disrupt public order or endanger the safety of citizens. Therefore, consult with the municipality, the police, and, if necessary, the fire department in advance. They will provide, for example, crowd control barriers and road closures, first aid, and, if necessary, police escorts.
Under what circumstances may a municipality ban a demonstration?
- You submitted your demonstration notice to the municipality too late.
- You did not provide the municipality with the required information on time.
- In the interest of traffic and traffic safety.
- To prevent disturbances and aggression from occurring.
- To protect people's health.
The content of a demonstration should never be the reason for a restriction or ban.
What should I do?
You must notify the municipality of your demonstration. Do this at least 48 hours before the event takes place. Provide the municipality with the following information:
- your name and address
- the purpose of the meeting
- date of the meeting
- What time does the meeting start and end?
- the location and/or the route
- number of people you expect
- measures you, as the organizer, take to ensure the event runs smoothly
