Holding a demonstration or protest action
In the Netherlands, everyone is allowed to organize a demonstration or protest action. This is a fundamental right. If you want to demonstrate in a public place, you must notify the municipality at least 48 hours in advance. This allows for a timely assessment of whether measures are necessary, for example regarding traffic and safety.
How does it work?
It is important that the demonstration does not disrupt public order or endanger the safety of citizens. Therefore, consult in advance with the municipality, the police, and possibly the fire department. They will provide items such as barricades and road closures, first aid, and possibly police escort.
When can the municipality prohibit a demonstration?
- You notified the municipality of your demonstration too late.
- You did not provide the municipality with the required information on time.
- In the interest of traffic and traffic safety.
- To prevent riots and aggression from arising.
- To protect health.
The content of a demonstration may never be the reason for a restriction or ban.
What to do?
You notify the municipality of your demonstration. Do this at least 48 hours before you hold the gathering. Provide the municipality with the following information:
- your name and address
- the purpose of the gathering
- date of the gathering
- what time the gathering starts and ends
- the location and/or route
- number of people you expect
- measures you as the organizer will take to ensure the gathering proceeds smoothly
