WarmtelinQ is an underground pipeline that uses heat from the port of Rotterdam to heat homes and businesses in South Holland more sustainably. A T-junction is currently being installed in the Oostvlietpolder, so that Voorschoten also has the option to connect to WarmtelinQ.

In line with the national Climate Agreement, the Municipality of Voorschoten aims to heat all homes and buildings completely free of natural gas by 2050.

Tap option

In July 2024, Leiden and Voorschoten signed an agreement with Gasunie regarding a so-called 'T-junction'. This states that Gasunie will construct a tap connection on the WarmtelinQ pipeline to which Voorschoten can connect. Gasunie is the owner of WarmtelinQ.

Heat transfer station

A heat transfer station may be built at the Hofweg “ neighbourhood .” This is necessary to transfer heat from the WarmtelinQ pipeline to the local pipes of the district heating network that may be established in Voorschoten.

Free to choose

Connecting to a heat network is not mandatory. Approximately 80 percent of homes in Voorschoten are suitable for a heat network. However, for homes that are very well insulated, for instance, a heat pump is a more affordable solution.

What is a heat network?

A district heating system, also known as a heat network, is a solution for heating an entire street, neighbourhood , or neighborhood. In this system, hot water from a source—such as waste heat from the Port of Rotterdam—flows through underground pipes to all connected homes.

Who decides whether my home is connected to a heat network?

If a heat network comes to your street, the homeowner or homeowners' association will determine whether your home is connected to the heat network.

Do I need to remodel my house to make a heat network work properly?

No, there only needs to be a space for the heat network's 'delivery set', which acts as the central heating boiler for the heat network user. The delivery set is the link between the heat network and the radiators and hot water tap in your home.

When can I use the heat?

Heat from WarmtelinQ in Voorschoten is not expected to be available before 2030. The municipality creates a heat plan for each group of matching homes. We do this together with residents, housing associations, social organisations, and other partners. The plan outlines the best solution and how we will approach it together.

Do I need to Health about construction traffic or vibrations?

A wooden construction road that does not cause dust has been constructed in the Oostvlietpolder. During the installation of the pipes, the municipality does not expect any vibrations that could cause damage to homes, for example.
