WarmtelinQ

WarmtelinQ is an underground pipeline that uses heat from the Port of Rotterdam to provide more sustainable heating for homes and businesses in South Holland. A T-junction is currently being installed in the Oostvlietpolder so that Voorschoten can also connect to WarmtelinQ.

In line with the national Climate Agreement, the Municipality of Voorschoten aims to have all homes and buildings heated entirely without natural gas by 2050.

Drainage option

In July 2024, Leiden and Voorschoten signed an agreement with Gasunie regarding a so-called “T-piece.” The agreement stipulates that Gasunie will install a tap on the WarmtelinQ pipeline, to which Voorschoten can connect. Gasunie is the owner of WarmtelinQ.

Heat Transfer Station

A heat transfer station may be built near Hofweg. This is necessary to transfer heat from the WarmtelinQ pipeline to the local pipes of the district heating network that may be established in Voorschoten.

Free to Choose

Connecting to a district heating network is not mandatory. About 80 percent of the homes in Voorschoten are suitable for a district heating network. However, for homes that are very well insulated, for example, a heat pump is a more affordable solution.

What is a district heating network?

A district heating system, also known as a heat network, is a solution for heating an entire street, neighborhood, or district. In this system, hot water from a source—such as waste heat from the Port of Rotterdam—flows through underground pipes to all connected homes.

Who decides whether my home will be connected to a district heating network?

If a district heating network is being installed on your street, the homeowner or the homeowners' association will decide whether your home will be connected to the network.

Do I need to renovate my house for a district heating system to work properly?

No, there just needs to be a place for the district heating “delivery unit”—that is, the boiler for the district heating user. The delivery unit is the link between the district heating network and the heating system and hot water faucet in your home.

When can I use the heat?

Heat from WarmtelinQ in Voorschoten is not expected to be available until at least 2030. The municipality is developing a heating plan for each group of homes that are compatible with one another. We are doing this in collaboration with residents, housing authorities, community organizations, and other partners. The plan outlines the best solution and how we will implement it together.

Should I be concerned about construction traffic or vibrations?

A wooden construction road has been built in the Oostvlietpolder that does not generate dust. The municipality does not expect the installation of the pipes to cause any vibrations that could, for example, damage homes.
