Homeowners in the Vlietwijk neighborhood can participate in a drinking water study

Homeowners in Vlietwijk whose homes were built before 1960 can also have their drinking water tested for lead. They can participate in the drinking water testing that Rijnhart Wonen is having conducted on rental properties in the neighborhood. Homeowners will receive a letter from Rijnhart Wonen about this this week.

Homeowners are responsible for the cost of the testing. Homeowners who wish to have the drinking water in their homes tested can register using the form on the Rijnhart Wonen website:www.rijnhartwonen.nl/nieuws/drinkwateronderzoek-in-vlietwijk.

After you register, the research agency will contact you. A representative from the agency will take two samples of the drinking water from your home. These samples will then be sent to the laboratory. The test results will be available in about a month.

Reason

The reason for the follow-up investigation is a previous drinking water test conducted at 55 rental homes in Vlietwijk. Excessive levels of lead were found in the drinking water at five of these homes. Rijnhart Wonen will have new water pipes installed in these homes shortly.

Residents of these five homes were advised not to use tap water for drinking, cooking, or preparing infant formula until the new pipes are installed. They can use bottled water for these purposes. Showering, washing, and flushing the toilet are still permitted as usual.

Lead pipes

Homes built before 1960 may still have lead water pipes or remnants of them. As a result, lead can end up in the drinking water. In many homes, these pipes have since been replaced.

Lead in drinking water is harmful to health, especially for vulnerable groups (pregnant women, women planning to become pregnant, and children under 7 years of age). The GGD advises these groups to use bottled water until it is clear whether there is lead in the tap water.
