Excessive Lead Levels Found in Drinking Water at Five Homes in Vlietwijk

While preparing for renovation work in the Vlietwijk neighborhood of Voorschoten, the housing authority Rijnhart Wonen had the drinking water tested in 55 rental units. It turns out that five of these units have excessive levels of lead in their drinking water. This was announced yesterday.

In the past, lead water pipes were used in homes. In most homes, these have since been replaced. Sometimes, homes built before 1960 still have small sections of lead piping. This can cause lead to get into the drinking water.

The residents involved in the investigation have been informed of the results. Residents of the five homes with excessive lead levels in their drinking water are advised not to drink tap water or use it for cooking for the time being. They should use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and food preparation.

The same applies to preparing formula. Residents can use bottled water that is suitable for babies; this is indicated on the label. Residents can, however, use tap water as usual for showering, washing, and flushing the toilet.

New pipes

A contractor from Rijnhart Wonen will begin work as soon as possible in the homes of tenants whose drinking water has elevated lead levels. New water pipes will then be installed in those homes where necessary.

The municipality also wants the water pipes in the approximately 400 remaining rental units in Vlietwijk to be inspected in the near future. The residents have already been notified of this.

Health Advice

In its next steps, Rijnhart Wonen will follow the health advice issued by the GGD. The GGD advises that, in the case of pipes with excessive lead levels, people should not drink tap water until the pipes have been replaced. This is especially important for bottle-fed infants, children up to age 7, pregnant women, and women who are trying to conceive.

In the coming period, the municipality will remain in close contact with Rijnhart Wonen regarding the project’s progress. We will also update the information on the Vlietwijk neighborhood renewal project page.
