Letter to Young Families Regarding Drinking Water Testing

The Municipality of Voorschoten took additional action today to inform parents of young children (up to age 7) via a letter about the ongoing drinking water investigation in rental properties managed by Rijnhart Wonen. The GGD recommends using bottled water during the investigation.

The municipality provided further clarification of the GGD's recommendation in a letter to young families living in rental homes where the drinking water testing is taking place.

Previous research showed that excessive lead levels were found in the drinking water at 5 of the first 55 homes tested in Vlietwijk. As a result, approximately 400 rental homes will be tested in the coming period. These are homes owned by Rijnhart Woningen that were built before 1960. Some of these homes are located outside Vlietwijk.

No water from the faucet

According to a report from the GGD Hollands Midden, unborn children, infants, and young children are particularly vulnerable to the potential effects of lead in drinking water.

The GGD advises that, in the case of pipes with excessive lead levels, people should not drink tap water until the pipes have been replaced. This is especially important for bottle-fed infants, children up to age 7, pregnant women, and women who are trying to conceive.

Right of Way

The GGD advises these groups to use bottled water as a precaution for drinking, making coffee and tea, preparing food, and making infant formula. This advice remains in effect until the results of the drinking water test for the residence are known.

Households with children up to age 7 will be given the opportunity to have their homes inspected on a priority basis. Parents can contact Rijnhart Wonen directly for this purpose.
