Litter in Voorschoten
Litter is a thorn in the side of many people. It refers to all waste that—whether intentionally or unintentionally—is left behind or ends up in places where it doesn’t belong, such as on the street or in nature. Litter is also a major cause of the plastic soup in the oceans. Litter consists mainly of cigarette butts, chewing gum, and packaging waste such as candy wrappers, plastic bottles, cans, and french fry containers. Preventing litter is a shared responsibility, but everyone can also help clean it up.
Facts and Figures
Much litter remains on the ground indefinitely if it is not cleaned up. This includes glass, aluminum, plastic (such as PET bottles), or items containing microplastics (cigarette butts). Plastic waste breaks down, but the microplastics remain forever. Other types of waste do break down, but the time it takes can vary greatly. Here are some figures:
Take Action Yourself
Would you like to take action yourself, for example by picking up litter? We’d really appreciate it! Every little bit helps. You can request a free cleanup kit (litter picker and trash bag holder) through our contact form. Please indicate on the form that you’re requesting a cleanup kit. One set is provided per address. After you submit your request, we’ll contact you to schedule an appointment. You can then pick up the cleanup kit at Koninklijke Marinelaan 21.

What is the municipality doing about litter?
Every week, we collect about 15 full trash bags of litter from the streets and natural areas, and we empty 300 trash cans.
