Sisters Transfer Huize Bijdorp to the Leaseholder

Nearly 147 years ago, the Congregation of Saint Catherine of Siena purchased the Bijdorp country estate. The sisters decided to establish a school there for young ladies of high social standing to provide them with a refined and religious education. After a rich history, the sisters began developing plans in 2017 for the future of their country estate, in line with the congregation’s core values. The congregation aims to open its doors and transform the estate into a place to live, work, and learn. Its social significance is of great importance.

Great respect for the Dominican Sisters

To celebrate the completion of the transfer to the leaseholder, Huize Bijdorp Voorschoten B.V., a festive gathering is being held. Alderman Hans van der Elst: “I have great respect for the Dominican Sisters who have invested time, money, and courage in preserving Huize Bijdorp for the distant future. It’s wonderful that, thanks to their ambition and rigorous approach, this has been achieved in such a relatively short time. On behalf of the municipal executive, I warmly congratulate the sisters on this remarkable achievement.”

Bowl with an inscription for Peter Meijs

By presenting a plaque with an inscription from the municipality of Voorschoten, the alderman also thanked Peter Meijs, who has successfully guided the transition from monastery to a new future for the country estate. “Without Peter, we wouldn’t be standing here today. I’ve spoken with the sisters, and they all agree that this remarkable achievement deserves recognition. By opening and preserving the country estate, the entire town of Voorschoten will benefit from his efforts.”
