Councilor Van der Elst Visits Elementary School as Part of “Safe School Environment” Theme Month

This morning, Councilman Hans van der Elst visited the Gevers Deynoot Elementary School to join the children in calling for greater attention to traffic safety. Together with the school principal, the councilman gave a speech about the “Safe School Environment” theme month. Afterward, the theme month was officially kicked off by blowing bubbles together with the students .

The new school year began on August 22. This means that children and teenagers are once again taking to the roads in large numbers and participating in traffic. Especially during the first three months after summer vacation, more children are involved in traffic accidents. This is not only due to their inexperience in traffic, but also because drivers are no longer used to seeing so many children on their way to school. That is why the municipality of Voorschoten, the Holland Rijnland region, ROV Zuid-Holland, and Veilig Verkeer Nederland—together with the police and schools—have been running the “Our Schools Are Back in Session” campaign for years.

This campaign encourages drivers to be mindful of children and teenagers returning to school after summer break. Everyone has seen the large banners that are hung above the roads every year. This year, the municipality is placing extra emphasis on traffic safety, including through the installation of digital speed signs and campaign posters.
