Councilmember Spil Calls for Attention to Fair Trade Week

Fair Trade is needed now more than ever

From May 8 through May 16, Fairtrade will be in the spotlight across the country. In Voorschoten, special attention will be given to the hospitality industry and cooking with fair-trade and organic ingredients. Councilwoman Erika Spil is calling on the residents of Voorschoten to order something next week—weather permitting—on the patio of one of the participating restaurants or to pick up a meal to enjoy at home. 

Councilwoman Erika Spil (Sustainability): “Once a year, Fair Trade products are displayed in store windows during Fair Trade Week. The Fair Trade working group in Voorschoten organizes this, and the municipality wholeheartedly supports the initiative.”

Fair Trade Week 

The week of May 8 through 16 is all about Fairtrade. It’s a time when restaurants, businesses, stores, municipalities, and volunteers are drawing extra attention to Fairtrade. Especially in these uncertain times, Fairtrade is more important than ever. Farmers and workers in developing countries are being hit hard by the coronavirus. By choosing Fairtrade products, you’re giving them a helping hand.

Participating restaurants in Voorschoten are: Va Bene, La Casita, Hudson, Nayolie, Tries 54, De Mazzel, De Knip, and the bar-bistro Het Wedde.

Fair Trade for Organizations

Companies and organizations can also purchase Fairtrade products. At the Wereldwinkel in Voorschoten, Fairtrade (gift) items are available for purchase, and you can buy Fairtrade coffee and tea. You can also visit the Wereldwinkel for corporate gifts in the form of gift items, gift certificates, or custom-assembled packages. So it’s very easy for organizations to contribute to sustainable poverty reduction. 

Fairtrade Community 

Voorschoten has been a Fairtrade Town since 2019. This means that residents, stores, businesses, community organizations, and the municipality work together to promote fair trade as much as possible. The Voorschoten Fairtrade Municipality Working Group prepares an annual report to demonstrate that the municipality continues to meet the requirements. This working group consists of a diverse group of representatives from various sectors of society.
