Councilor Schokker Visits Fortgens School for the “Our Schools Are Back in Session” Campaign

This morning, Councilman Hubert Schokker visited the Fortgens School to join the students in calling for greater attention to traffic safety. In the schoolyard, the councilman, together with the school principal, gave a speech about the “Safe School Environment” theme month. Afterward, the theme month was officially kicked off with a big bubble-blowing activity. 

The new school year began on August 21. This means that children and teenagers are once again taking to the roads in large numbers and participating in traffic. Alderman Schokker: “We see that, especially in the first three months after summer vacation, more children are involved in traffic accidents. This is not only due to their inexperience in traffic, but also because drivers are no longer used to seeing so many children on their way to school. Together, we must ensure that children in Voorschoten can get to school safely. That is why the Municipality of Voorschoten, the Holland Rijnland region, ROV Zuid-Holland, and Veilig Verkeer Nederland—in collaboration with the police and schools—have been running the ‘Our Schools Have Started Again’campaign for years.”

The “Our Schools Are Back in Session ” campaign encourages drivers to be mindful of children and teenagers returning to school after summer break. Everyone has probably already seen the familiar banners hanging above the roads. In addition, we in Voorschoten are paying extra attention to traffic safety by participating in national campaigns such as BOB and MONO. We also regularly put up smiley signs in various locations throughout the municipality.
