City Council Member Opens Renovated Playground at Mayor Berkhout Park

In the fall of 2024, local children had the opportunity to create their own designs for a cool and fun playground on a Wednesday afternoon. They did this using the “Playground Builder” tool from the consulting firm Speelplan. Based on their ideas, Speelplan developed two designs featuring new play equipment, improved surfacing, and additional greenery. Children and local residents were then able to vote on these designs.

The play tubes and old climbing logs were replaced by a new pentagonal swing, a tower with a climbing net, stepping stones, a balance course, and an under-and-over course with a rope leading to the play hill. The soccer goals and the large slide have been retained, although the slide did receive new surfacing. In the coming years, the blue space net and the cable car will be replaced by a fitness station, a new cable car, and a play area for younger children featuring a spinning ride, a toddler swing, a duo spring rocker, and a combination play structure.

“A good playground encourages children to explore, socialize, and be active in a way that suits the kids in the neighborhood,” says Councilman Hubert Schokker, who cut the ribbon to officially open the playground. “I think it’s wonderful that this playground was designed in collaboration with the children and local residents. You can see how their ideas have been incorporated into the design. It has become a place with challenging play equipment and plenty of greenery, where you can play, exercise, and get together. I hope people of all ages have hours of fun here!”
