City Council Member Receives Petition to Build an Inline Skating Track

Yesterday, Jan Altenburg of the Voorschoten Ice Skating Club presented a petition with 1,405 signatures to Alderman Hans van der Elst. The petition’s signatories want to build an inline skating track on the site of the outdoor ice rink. The ice rink will continue to operate as usual.

Alderman Hans van der Elst received the petition titled “Build a Rollerblading Track in Voorschoten” from Jan Altenburg, the petition’s initiator and an avid skater and rollerblader. In the presence of Chairman Rob Hemmes and several members of the board of the Voorschoten Ice Skating Club, Jan gave a presentation on the details and rationale behind the rollerblading track.

Winters Are Getting Warmer and Warmer

According to the organizers, given the increasingly warmer winters, building an inline skating track is essential for the survival of an ice skating club. On such a track, it is possible to skate within a few days, often even when the temperature is just a few degrees below freezing.

A Healthy Generation

“As a municipality, we should count ourselves lucky to have initiatives like this,” says the alderman. “Ice skating and inline skating fit perfectly into the vitality agreement through which Voorschoten is working toward a healthy generation. Together with the ice skating club, we’re going to explore whether—and if so, how—an inline skating track can be built on the site of the current outdoor ice rink.”
