City Council Member and Students Kick Off Safe School Environment Month
This morning, Councilman Hubert Schokker and students from De Vink Elementary School kicked off Safe School Environment Month. In the schoolyard, the councilman and the school principal spoke about traffic safety. The theme month was then officially opened with bubble blowing and the familiar banner reading “Our schools are back in session.”
The new school year began on Monday, August 26. Children are once again heading to school in large numbers and taking part in traffic. Especially during the first three months after summer vacation, more children are involved in traffic accidents. This is not only due to their inexperience in traffic, but also because drivers are no longer used to seeing so many children on their way to school.
Be on the lookout
“Together, we must ensure that children in Voorschoten can get to school safely,” says Councilor Schokker. “That’s why I’m glad we can once again organize this theme month together with Holland Rijnland, ROV Zuid-Holland, Veilig Verkeer Nederland, the police, and schools. On the one hand, I’m asking children to look both ways carefully when riding their bikes and crossing the street. On the other hand, I’m asking drivers and other road users to be especially mindful of our young road users.”
