Work on the roundabout begins Tuesday, September 17
Update September 23, 2024 Following the preparatory work that began on Tuesday, September 17, the roundabout will undergo a major redesign starting Wednesday, September 25. Starting that day, traffic lights will be in place at the roundabout. Traffic coming from the direction of Leidschendam and from the direction of Leiden will be allowed through alternately. Raadhuislaan is closed. The work consists of two phases and will last until November 10 at the latest.
Phase 1 begins on Wednesday, September 25. During this phase, all traffic passing through the roundabout will be directed along the north side of the roundabout (the side facing City Hall). Raadhuislaan will also be closed at the Albert Heijn. If you’re heading to Raadhuislaan and are coming from Leidschendam, you can take Badhuisstraat. Detour signs will be posted along the roadside to guide you.
Phase 2 begins on Monday, October 21. During this phase, all traffic traveling through the roundabout will be directed along the south side of the roundabout (the side with the Albert Heijn). Raadhuislaan will also be closed at the Albert Heijn during this phase. If you need to get to Raadhuislaan, you can take Badhuisstraat.
Bus line 5 normally runs along Raadhuislaan. However, Raadhuislaan is closed. For this reason, the bus company has decided to skip the Vlietwijk and Nieuw Voordorpstraat stops. This applies to both phases.
The work will take place during the day and may cause significant delays and traffic jams.
Traffic lights, detour signs, and traffic controllers
To ensure safe passage, traffic lights will be installed, with traffic coming from the direction of Leidschendam and from the direction of Leiden taking turns to receive a green light. The route will be marked with detour signs. Traffic controllers will be on site during the work.
During the construction work, the parking lot across from Albert Heijn will no longer be accessible from the roundabout. You will need to drive via Badhuisstraat to park there. The same applies to the parking garage at Albert Heijn.
Cyclists will be rerouted via side streets. Detour signs will be posted for this purpose. However, different detour routes apply to cyclists during phases 1 and 2.
The Bigger Picture
The construction of a new roundabout is part of a larger plan. “We’re going to install new pavement, a future-proof sewer system, and ample landscaping along Oranjeboomstraat and Raadhuislaan and the surrounding area. But the main focus is on improving bicycle safety at the roundabout,” explains Alderman Hubert Schokker. “That’s why we’re tackling that first. The residential streets will follow after the New Year. I ask our residents and business owners for their patience during this inconvenience. Once it’s all done, we’ll all benefit from it.”
