Voorschoten Earns a Score of 9 in National Financial Benchmark
The municipality of Voorschoten has a solid financial foundation. This is evident from the benchmark study of Dutch municipalities conducted by the accounting and consulting firm BDO. In the latest report, Voorschoten received a score of 9 and rose to 56th place among 134 comparable municipalities.
“We’re proud of this excellent result,” says Councilman Hans van der Elst. “It confirms that our finances are in order and that we’re managing them carefully. At the same time, we see that municipalities throughout the Netherlands—including Voorschoten—are facing increasing pressure on their financial resources. That’s why we’re not only pleased with these results, but they also serve as an incentive to stay focused.”
Structural pressure on the budget
The benchmark study shows that many municipalities are experiencing structural pressure on their budgets. This is due, in part, to uncertainty regarding funding from the national government and challenges related to energy and climate. Furthermore, it is difficult to recruit enough staff. As a result, not all plans can be implemented.
Annual survey
BDO conducts an annual review of the financial position of Dutch municipalities. For this large-scale study, the organization uses the financial metrics that municipalities themselves report in their annual financial statements. Based on these figures and a roundtable discussion, BDO compiles a ranking and presents its perspective on the sector, along with conclusions and recommendations.
