New Schools and Community Center on Korte Vliet in Leiden
In Leiden, across from the Korte Vliet near Het Fortuyn van Voorschoten, the City of Leiden is constructing new school buildings and a community center.
Between the Korte Vliet and Johan Wagenaarlaan in Leiden, there are several aging school buildings. Starting this fall and continuing through 2027, construction projects at the “ programme ” will breathe new life into the site. Two new school buildings and a community center will be built. This also offers great opportunities for school-age children from Voorschoten.
Vlietland Executive board
The red, blue, and yellow low-rise building along the Korte Vliet, formerly home to ROC Mondriaan, is being demolished. It will be replaced by a new school building, featuring three gyms on the street side and a recess courtyard on the waterfront. The Vlietland Executive board on Apollolaan will relocate to this new school building. Construction will begin in the spring of 2025. Completion is expected by the end of 2026. The Vlietland Executive board building on Apollolaan will serve as a temporary location for other Leiden schools undergoing renovation.
The application for an environmental permit for the Vlietland Executive board was submitted on July 17. The case number is Z/24/3711261. Interested parties can view the application by calling the City of Leiden at 14071 (Leiden, option 4) or by filling out the form at www.leiden.nl/contact.
Leonardo da Vinci School Group
The upper portion of the former ROC building is being renovated. This is where the Leonardo da Vinci School Group’s International Transition Class (ISK) is located. The ISK provides young people aged 12 to 18 who speak another language and have little or no command of Dutch with a solid foundation for the future. This is achieved through daytime instruction and a comprehensive curriculum, both at a regular school and within the community. The renovation will begin in the summer of 2025 and is expected to take one year.
Fatih Community Center Foundation
The Fatih Foundation is located on the north side of the site. The existing building will be demolished. The foundation will construct a new building on this site. Fatih is a social foundation focused on the integration, empowerment, participation, and achievement of its members in society. Construction on this project will begin in 2026. Completion is expected in 2027.
Possible Disruptions
Demolition work will begin in October 2024 and is expected to last 3 months. This work may cause some disruption. The demolition of the roofs and walls is not expected to cause much (noise) disturbance, as they are made of lightweight materials. Removing the concrete floor will generate more noise. Some of the demolition debris will be transported by water to minimize disruption on the road. The shipping route has not yet been determined.
Further communication
The City of Leiden has already organized several information sessions for residents living near the site in Leiden. Now that the plans are taking shape, residents of Voorschoten who live near the site are also being informed. For example, we expect to send a letter to the residents of Het Fortuyn in Voorschoten in September. We will then also inform the rest of the residents through the newspaper, our website, and social media.
