The heat plan will take effect on August 10

After consulting with the KNMI, the RIVM has decided to activate the National Heat Plan. This applies starting Wednesday, August 10, 2022, to all provinces and is likely to remain in effect until after the weekend. Through the National Heat Plan, the RIVM informs organizations, professionals, and informal caregivers about the expected heat. They can take this into account when supporting and caring for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and young children. In this way, they help reduce and, where possible, prevent discomfort and health problems.

Hot Weather: Enjoy It and Be Careful

Although many people enjoy warm weather, it can be unpleasant or even dangerous for others. People who are unable to take proper care of themselves need extra attention on hot days to minimize the effects of the heat and prevent health problems. They may experience symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. They are also at greater risk of more serious health problems, such as dehydration and heatstroke.

Vulnerable groups

Older adults (75+) are the most vulnerable group, because they have more difficulty regulating their body temperature and are less likely to feel thirsty. People with chronic conditions, those who are socially isolated, the homeless, and (very) young children can also easily experience discomfort or health problems if measures are not taken.

Reducing and Preventing Discomforts and Health Problems

If tropical conditions persist for several days, even people in good health can suffer from heat exhaustion or heatstroke. It’s also a good idea to consider whether there are vulnerable people in your community and to keep an extra eye on them. There are several things you can do to cope better with the heat:

  • Be sure to drink enough fluids
  • Don't be too active during the hottest hours of the day, so limit physical activity in the afternoon and early evening
  • Keep your home (and mind) cool by closing the curtains and turning on a fan orair conditioner
