Trompweg – Leidseweg and surrounding area

In December 2019, the city council decided to reroute the 50-km access road on Leidseweg, right through the Intratuin site slated for new development. The homes in the new Fortuyn van Voorschoten residential neighborhood are now being completed one by one. Griffioenlaan will (in the future) serve as the new neighborhood access road to Leiden. 

The Leidseweg–Trompweg intersection (red circle) will be addressed in several phases:

  • Construction of the Griffioenlaan–Trompweg Traffic Interchange Project (Phase 1) 
  • Temporary Changes at the Leidseweg–Trompweg Intersection (Phase 2) 
  • Changes Due to the Opening of Griffioenlaan (Phase 3) 
  • Final landscaping in conjunction with sewer system rehabilitation (Phase 4)

An explanation is provided below for each project phase.

Planning

Phase 1: The Griffioenlaan–Trompweg traffic connection has been completed.

Phase 2: Temporary modifications to the Leidseweg–Trompweg intersection have been completed.

Phase 3: Adjustments due to the opening of Griffioenlaan (2027)

De Groote Vink is being redesigned. As a result, the route for traffic between Voorschoten and Leiden will change. Griffioenlaan will be connected to De Groote Vink, becoming a new route to access the area. The junction of Leidseweg-Noord (Noord) and De Groote Vink will be removed. Leidseweg-Noord (Noord) will become a dead-end street. This means that Griffioenlaan will become the new connection between Voorschoten and Leiden.

Due to this change, minor adjustments will need to be made to the Leidseweg–Trompweg intersection:

  • Trompweg will become a priority road. This will be indicated by new road markings and signs.

  • The speed limit on Leidseweg-Noord (North) will be reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. A gate structure will be installed at the intersection, just like on Leidseweg-Midden.

This arrangement will remain in place until the sewer renovation is completed (2030).

Phase 4: Final design in conjunction with sewer system rehabilitation

The road will be redesigned during the sewer work. The median strips on Leidseweg will be removed. The junction of Leidseweg and Trompweg will be equipped with an exit ramp.
