TenneT is looking for businesses and organizations that want to help reduce peak demand
The high-voltage grid in the province of South Holland has reached its maximum capacity to meet electricity demand. Starting in September, the national grid operator TenneT will be surveying companies and organizations to see which ones are willing to help use the existing grid more efficiently and thereby reduce peak loads.
On December 5, 2024, it was already announced that the high-voltage grid had reached its maximum capacity. Due to so-called transmission constraints (grid congestion), regional grid operators such as Liander were placed on a waiting list. TenneT announced at the time that it would conduct an investigation into grid congestion. It is now getting started on that investigation. Together with the regional grid operators Liander and Stedin, it will investigate how much additional capacity is needed in the region and when.
Flexible capacity
The high-voltage grid is a single, integrated system that connects multiple regions. That is why TenneT, Liander, and Stedin are working together. Starting in early September, the three grid operators will begin discussions with companies and organizations that want to help reduce peak demand by making smarter use of the existing grid through flexible capacity. These customers will receive financial compensation for their participation.
